ICC, Birmingham A national conference for voluntary and community organisations working to tackle inequality and promote human rights. There is a widespread perception in the third sector that grant funding from local authorities has declined significantly. This Finance Hub-funded national research examines the real state of local authority funding, the drivers that are fuelling change and the financial, structural and developmental consequences for third sector organisations. Birmingham Race Action Partnership (BRAP) have been commissioned to undertake this research and have been conducting a consultation exercise with local authority organisations and third sector organisations since September. The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) and National Council for Child Care Organisations (NCVCCO) are holding a series of regional workshops around the UK about ContactPoint – an information point concerning children – with representatives from the voluntary and community sector. The workshop in the South West will be taking place in Somerset. Venue on application. All Saints Church, Bampfylde Road, Torquay Every year All Saints Church, Torre holds its spectacular Christmas Tree Festival which attracts several thousand visitors over the weeklong event. Every tree (and there are about 50 of them!) is decorated and sponsored by a charity or faith group. Visitors will be treated not only to a visual display but also concerts which will take place during the festival. Nearly all the trees already have sponsorship – however about 4 trees are still looking for a sponsor. The cost of sponsoring a tree is £28.00 which covers the cost of the tree, lighting and heating during the festival. It is a lovely way to raise the profile of an organisation. The first, CultureWATCH, begins on 6th November from 20.00-21.00 and will continue on the first Tuesday of each month – it is an opportunity to study with the Bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other. The sessions will look at what is influencing contemporary culture, beliefs and underlying values and will seek a Christian response. Second, St Nicholas will be observing Global Poverty Week, with daily prayers on related themes from 12.00-13.00. Living Stones Evangelical Church (Russian speaking) is looking for a building to worship in 4-5 times a week, including Sundays. They need a space for about 80-100. Father Chrysostom and his congregation seek a venue for Sunday worship between 10.00-11.00 where they can keep a permanent altar and icon screen and occasionally access the building on other days. Funded by Poole Partnership the website is a resource to enable members of Poole and Bournemouth’s many congregations to maintain contacts and it is also becoming more and more a means by which the statutory authorities consult with faith communities. The new website explains its values, aims and objectives and the way in which organisations can get involved. Seminars are being held in each region to answer questions about the fund from VCS organisations which are involved in projects to improve people’s access to legal advice, working in partnership with VCS organisations delivering legal advice in their area and other relevant statutory and commercial advice organisations, who can discuss their project in detail, are looking for between £10,000-£500,000 and can demonstrate sustainability in the future. The Foundation is particularly interested in work with newly arrived refugees, asylum seekers or their host communities. The Foundation doesn’t specify precisely what types of activity it will support, but past work includes challenging media stereotypes, facilitating integration of refugees and asylum seekers, creating opportunities for education, training or employment. Grants of between £6,000-£12,000 are aimed at locally run and managed voluntary and community organisations with an income of less than £50,000 per year, run by volunteers or with one full time or two part time paid staff. The third and final round of the fund is also supporting local projects that will focus on the legacy of the slave trade following the 200th anniversary of the passage of the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 2007. Through the Bright Ideas programme, grants can support day centres and luncheon clubs, visiting & befriending, information & advice services, health & safety initiatives, arts, cultural and reminiscence activities, foot care, bathing and hairdressing, respite for carers, gardening and domestic services, and activities enabling older people to make their voices heard in society.
